You may have heard of the Glycemic Foods Index if you are trying to lose weight. If you’re a diabetic you’ve heard of it for sure! The glycemic foods index is truly a big deal in the worlds of healthy eating and weight loss. It’s no longer only being used by diabetics needing to control their blood sugar levels.

The Glycemic Foods Index, here’s how it works.
The blood sugar levels of diabetics needs to be controlled and prior to the development of the glycemic foods index, there was no effective tool to anticipate the effects of various foods on the blood sugar.
The glycemic foods index was developed to help diabetics understand the rapid roller coaster ups and downs of their blood sugar levels throughout the day.
At last, using this amazing tool, both the diabetics and their doctors could know what was being eaten and how it was affecting their blood sugar.
What makes it work?
It’s a simple concept. The glycemic foods index is a chart that lists foods on a scale of 0 to 100. They are listed in terms of the speed at which food is digested - digestion turns food into glucose (sugar) - and how fast the glucose hits your bloodstream.
Your body is able to digest certain foods faster than others. It’s this concept that is at the base of the index. The highest levels of blood sugar spikes come from the foods that are digested the fastest.
Foods that take longer to digest and be turned into glucose are at the other end of the spectrum and enter the bloodstream more slowly and at a steadier pace.
This is good news for all of us - not just the type 1 and type 2 diabetics. Completely healthy people are now starting to use the chart to help them lose weight, reduce the risk of heart disease and diabetes and more
What makes up the actual Glycemic Foods index list/
Simply, it’s a list that gives you the rating of all the various foods you are likely to encounter. From bread to ice cream.
The great part is, that everything you are likely to eat is listed! From potatoes to beans, it’s pretty easy to see where they fall on the list and how good (or bad) they are likely to be for your diet. Thinking about a cookie or an apple? Check the list.
The list makes weight loss and blood sugar management easy. It’s dieting by the numbers! High numbers are bad, low numbers are good. Just start trading the high number foods for lower numbered choice.
