Flexibility exercises are stretches that help keep the body in shape and the joints healthy and flexible. Many people do two or three of these exercise types to stay in shape and keep weight under control. A full exercise regimen should include some of all of these types of exercise.

It is recommended that everyone do cardio exercises. It raises the metabolism and burns fat. It may also cut your changes of getting heart disease. The muscles should be worked vigorously when engaging in cardio workouts. It is generally recommended to do about 20 or 30 minutes of the exercises at least three days a week. Cardio activities can include taking an aerobics class or using gym machines. Or, the workout can be a jog or a long walk. Some prefer to play a sport such as racquetball or tennis for their cardio exercise. A safe and effective way to get a cardio workout is swimming, which is gentle to the joints.

Strength training is done to improve muscle mass and burn calories faster. These exercises help the body to burn calories and fat faster by boosting the metabolic rate. Strength training also gives the body an increased endurance. Using either weights or gym machines with resistance will give you a strength training workout. Using resistance machines is often recommended over free weights, as they will exercise more muscle groups. Strength training should be done at least twice a week to get optimal results. Muscles require resting time to recover from the previous workout. Doing them too often can result in muscles that are overstressed or even injured.

Flexibility exercises are ones that involve stretching. Stretching regularly leaves joints more flexible. Stretches are often done before cardio and strength training exercises. This will reduce the chances of being injured during a workout. This period of warming up should take about 10 minutes. Flexibility exercises can also be done by themselves. Flexibility exercises are safe for every day, unlike some other forms of exercise. They may also be done in a body of water for less muscle and joint strain. Yoga is another activity that promotes flexibility.

Exercising can be a specific workout regimen, dancing or playing sports. Doing physical activities more often can be considered exercise as well. Exercising can also be done by waling further than is required and climbing stairs even when there is an elevator. Before beginning any cardio or strength training activities, begin with some gentle stretching. Alternate the days that the cardio exercises and the strength training is done so that the muscles will not become overtaxed.
